Workshop: Letras Ltda., typographic cross-stitch
In this workshop we will build a bridge between two worlds that are more closely related than they seem: cross-stitch embroidery and typography. We will cover a little of the history, up to the subversive use of the technique, and then get straight into practice: we will each design a pattern based on a typeface or font of our choice, and then get to work with needle and thread.
Cross-stitch sets certain constraints that push us to look for particular alternatives for our designs: it is not a free medium, the grid rules, and the point is learning to suggest the form within that limit, like pixel art made by hand. So we will work on the variables that define the result, in order to reach a creative solution within these constraints.
Facundo Matiaude
Facundo Matiaude (Progreso, Canelones, Uruguay, 1995) currently lives in Montevideo. Trained in graphic design and visual communication, he works professionally in digital interface design and branding. He began experimenting with embroidery in 2018 and in recent years has developed an artistic practice centered on the technique, with a particular interest in counted-thread or modular stitches such as cross-stitch, and with tenderness, pop and the Latin American marica/cuir experience as its through line.
