Workshop: Expressive typography: form, texture and imprint

Caja Baja (UY), ORT09.09 — 14:00–17:00

In this workshop we invite you to think of the letter as a graphic element able to express itself through rhythm, texture and contrast. We will work with wood type combined with other physical matrices in different materials, and with hand inking, to explore the expressive possibilities of this printing system.

The session invites you to experiment freely and intuitively, playing with error and chance, producing a series of experimental prints with unique textures and discovering the visual and material richness of analog processes. A way to expand the language of your designs, setting up a dialogue between the materiality of hand printing and digital tools.

Caja Baja (G. Pasarisa)

Gabriel Pasarisa. Uruguay, Montevideo, 1965. Graphic designer, teacher and experimental printer. Self-taught, and since 1982 working in the graphic world, in the areas of editorial design and graphic production.

In the 1990s he was part of one of the first graphic printing cooperatives in Montevideo, IMCO (Imprenta Cooperativa), working on the technological transition from movable type printing to Offset printing. From 1998 to 2026 he taught graphic production and printing on the Graphic Design degree at Universidad ORT Uruguay.

In 2012 he founded his Caja Baja workshop, taking up the recovery of letterpress printing and relief engraving, seeking to strengthen the visual language of the technique and experimenting with its application in design and contemporary art.

His work consists of experimental prints mixing typographic forms, engravings and assorted objects used as printing matrices, where visual experimentation and hand inking define the character and personality of the piece. The appropriation, with experimental intervention, of texts by Uruguayan and international poets, as well as of the Uruguayan popular songbook, is a recurring thread in his work.

Pasarisa has run several experimental printing workshops for the Instituto Nacional de Artes Visuales in different parts of Uruguay. In 2016 he created the artistic and editorial project Calendario Caja Baja, still published today and printed with traditional techniques. In 2019 he was a selected artist in the international exhibition New Impressions 2019 at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, in Wisconsin. In 2022 he carried out the historical rescue and restoration of a 1902 Liberty platen press, part of the country’s cultural heritage, on which La luz de esta memoria, Ida Vitale’s first book, was printed. In 2026 he shows at the Museo Zorrilla the retrospective marking ten years of the Calendario Caja Baja, “10 años es un montón: una década imprimiendo el tiempo a mano”.
